Locks and Security
Most cycle insurance claims are for theft, either from the owner's home or while the cycle was left unattended.
We all dislike the fact that we need to carry a lock around with us but it’s a fact that Insurers expect us to take precautions to prevent a loss. Bikmo Plus cycle insurance cover is therefore provided subject to each insured cycle being secured with an ‘Approved Lock’.
An 'Approved Lock' is one which appears on the website of a division of the Master Locksmiths Association under the brand ‘Sold Secure’, see www.soldsecure.com.
The locks are graded according to their strength, reliability and sophistication into three categories:
Bronze rated locks are only suitable for cycles up to £250 replacement value.
Silver rated locks are only suitable for cycles up to £1500 replacement value.
Gold rated locks are suitable for cycles over £1500 replacement value.
The locks shown on the ‘Sold Secure’ website are the only locks which we consider to be ‘Approved’ for the purpose of the Bikmo Plus policy, up to the specific values stated above.
In the event of a claim you will need to provide us with evidence that you owned and were using an Approved Lock at the time the cycle was stolen.
If you are not currently using an Approved Lock you must replace it with one that is approved or face the possibility of having a claim disallowed.

The following definitions are referred to throughout your policy documentation in relation to the types of equipment that are covered, and can be claimed in the event of a loss;
Accessories & Spares
Accessories & Spares are defined as equipment that is not core to the operation of a bicycle, but perform a functional requirement in the pursuit of cycling. Accessories & Spares may be permanently or non-permanently affixed to the bicycle.
Accessories & Spares include;
- GPS and accessories. Please note : this does not include any smartphone or tablets devices used with navigation or tracking applications.
- Heart Rate Monitors
- Saddle bags
- Pannier racks
- Handlebar bags
- Frame bags
- Bells & horns
- Child seats
- Child trailers
- Bottle Cages
- Tools - multi tools / allen keys
- Equipment pouches
Clothing & Headgear
Clothing & Headgear can be worn or is required in the pursuit of cycling. Clothing & Headgear includes;
- Cycling Shorts
- bib, lycra, baggy
- Tights - bib or non bib
- Cycling trousers
- Jerseys - short or long sleeved
- Cycling shoes - clipped in or flat
- Arm and leg warmers
- Jackets - softshell / waterproof / other
- Cycling caps
- Gloves - short finger or long finger
- Knee & elbow pads
- Goggles & Sunglasses
- Neck braces
- Hydration packs
A bike box includes any piece of luggage who's purpose is to protect a bicycle whilst in transit.
This can include fabric, semi rigid or fully rigid bike boxes.

We love our bikes and we know you do too. We also know how stressful it is to have a bike stolen so we’re doing everything we can to prevent that from happening.
The Bikmo DNA+ forensic coding system and labels are part of that promise and why we’re providing it with every Bikmo Plus policy.
Bikmo DNA+ is part of our promise to help protect your bikes from the irritation and inconvenience that theft can cause.
Thieves are less likely to steal bikes where it can be proven that they’ve been stolen. The DNA+ labels let thieves know your bike and components can be traced.
The DNA+ system provides irrefutable proof of ownership to the police for any bike or component that’s been marked with the DNA+ liquid.

What is forensic coding?
Forensic coding is a means of marking products by applying a solution which can be detected by the police if a bicycle is stolen or recovered.
The Bikmo DNA+ system has two forms of coding in the solution. The liquid itself contains a code that is unique to your pack. The liquid also contains microdots – small particles that are laser etched with a code that is unique to your pack.
Together, the two forms of coding provide a robust means of identifying any product marked with the Bikmo DNA+.
How do I apply it?
It’s as easy as dabbing liquid onto any component that you wish to have marked. There’s full instructions in your Bikmo DNA+ pack to show how and where to apply the Bikmo DNA+ liquid.
How do you detect it?
Depending on the identification type police use different methods of detection. Using an ultraviolet light, the police can detect the presence of the Bikmo DNA+ marking.
If the thief hasn’t tried to file off the Bikmo DNA+ marking then a high-powered microscope is used to read the code from the microdots.
If the thief has tried to file away the Bikmo DNA+ marking then the remaining material can be sent to a laboratory for analysis.
Mark as many components as you wish on your chosen bike. We prefer to mark the underside of components to reduce visibility of the solution.
- Frame – top tube, down tube or chainstays
- Forks – inwards facing surfaces

- Wheels – rim or outside of hub
- Chainset – rear of crank arm

Theft, Vandalism and Accidental Damage
In the unfortunate event that your bikes is stolen, damaged or vandalised then please follow the steps below;
In the event of theft, please call your local Police
Call the Hiscox Claims Team on 0845 213 8899.

Complete and sign the claim form and return it to the following address with all the information requested from you (see the guidance notes attached to the claim form).

The claims process will be accelerated if your bike information is already uploaded in to Your Account section. Upload receipts, photos and other documents for each of your bikes or equipment when you take out your policy and you won't need to find them in the event of a claim.
Please be aware that the claim form and supporting information must be provided to Hiscox within 28 days of the occurrence. If you delay the Insurers reserve the right to reject the claim.
Do not order a replacement cycle, or hire a cycle, until your claim has been approved and you have been told how it is to be settled.
In the event your bike is stolen or damaged beyond repair, the claim is validated by Hiscox and the bicycle is worth in excess of £1,000 then you have two options for replacements;
Hiscox can settle the claim directly with you. This option is subject to the £100 excess covered in your policy documentation.
Bikmo.com can help you choose a replacement bike and source, where possible, from a local retailer. This option is excess free. You’ll have access to a bike expert on the Bikmo team who can guide you through your replacement bike or equipment.
Please advise your Hiscox claims handler as to which replacement option you would like to pursue.
If you’re involved in an incident then please follow the steps below;
- Do not admit liability, make a settlement offer or say anything which may prejudice our ability to defend your claim.
- Contact Hiscox Insurance as soon as possible on 01206 773 776 (9am – 5:30pm Monday to Friday) or email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
- Complete our Public Liability Report Form : Public Liability Form Download
Attach with the Public Liability form any correspondence received from the party who is claiming against you, together with other documents, photographs or information which will help to defend the claim.
Even when, after you have been involved in an accident, no claim against you has been intimated, but where you suspect that this is likely to happen, you should take the precaution of completing and submitting a Public Liability Report Form. Depending on the circumstances, claimants may have several years to bring their claim against you. The longer you leave completing the form, the more likely you are to forget details of what happened.
It is extremely important for you to notify us as soon as possible of any actual claim or any possible claim for compensation which has been or may be made against you as a result of a cycling accident.
If you’ve been injured as a result of an accident involving the use of your bicycle and wish to claim under the Personal Accident section of your policy then please take the following steps;

You’ll be required to describe the event that caused the injury and the nature of the injury. The team at Van Ameyde & Wallis Ltd will take you through the whole process.
If your bike is damaged or stolen, and you have an event or holiday in the near future which would not allow time to provide a replacement, then you’re entitled to hire a replacement bicycle of a similar specification to the value of £250. Please take the following steps;
Notify Hiscox Insurance on 0845 213 8899 to log the claim and get approval that the hire charges can be covered.
Hire your replacement bike form a cycle provider and make sure to get a receipt.

The hire charge will be refunded to your specified bank account within 28 days from approval of the claim.
Please note : unless you get prior approval before you hire a replacement cycle then the hire charges may not be covered.
If you’re broken down, you can't repair your bike and continue with your ride then take the following steps;
Notify Hiscox Insurance on 0845 213 8899 to log the claim and get approval that the transport charges can be covered.
Source transport back to the nearest location from which you can continue your journey (listed below) and make sure to get a receipt.

The transport charge will be refunded to your specified bank account within 28 days from approval of the claim.
- unless you get prior approval before you hire a replacement cycle then the hire charges may not be covered.
Provided your claim is approved, we will cover transport up to the value of £250 to;
- The nearest suitable bike shop OR
- The most appropriate train station OR
- Your vehicle if nearer OR
- Home, if it’s nearer than the above.
As a Bikmo Plus policyholder you have access to free legal advice around any claims relating to an incident, whether it is your fault, or the fault of a third party. This facility is provided by Bikmo and to access, please take the following steps;

They will endeavour to return your call within 24 hours to advise on the best approach to your situation.

How does it work?
- After becoming a Bikmo Plus customer, you’ll receive a unique referral code – this is also in Your Account section.
- Either use the ‘Get Rewards’ button in ‘Your Account’ or send your unique code to friends, family or colleagues.
