In this section you can find out all you need about Bikmo Plus Cycle Insurance from Frequently Asked Questions and the main benefits of the policy to the free Bikmo DNA+ pack you'll receive and how you can earn vouchers for new bike kit.

How do I calculate the maximum policy value?

This is the total value of all bikes and spares at home including multiple bikes that you own. Spares should only include components that normally form part of the bike and are not included in the Accessories & Spares or Clothing & Headgear lists. These normally include spare wheels, spare forks, saddles, handlebars, chainsets, workshop tools and workstands.

What is the total value away from the home?

This is the total value of bikes and equipment that you take away from the home at any one time. If you have 4 bikes but only take one out at a time then it'll be the value of your most expensive bike including any spares such as wheels.

If you have a partner or family members who cycle then you may need to add up the total value of all the cycles and kit that goes out at any one time.

When calculating the values don’t forget that we we include £250 or 10% (whichever is the greater) of your total sum insured for each of accessories & spares, clothing & headgear and bike boxes.

I've got a second set of expensive race wheels - are these covered?

They can be easily covered under your Bikmo Policy. Your 'Maximum Bike Value Away From Home' can be increased to cover a second set of wheels or, depending on the value of your wheels, they may be covered under the accessories and spares cover.

You have cover for £250 or 10% of your total sum insured for accessories and spares, which could be used for a second set of wheels. For example, if your total sum insured is £5,000, then you have £500 of cover for accessories and spares.

I ride trail centres in the UK - am I covered if I damage my bike whilst riding the trails?

Yes - trail centres are a large part of mountain biking in the UK and we wouldn't exclude places that a lot of us ride. Your cover includes accidental damage to your bike(s), personal injury and third party liability. For full details of your cover, please refer to the Main Benefits page.

I have a bespoke bike with non standard components - can I insure my bike?

Yes - you can insure your bike irrespective of brand, model or upgrades. You need to decide on a value against which to insure and that's the value you'll pay your premium on.

If you have a classic or bespoke bike then we may ask for a specialist bike shop to confirm the value of your bike before approving a claim. If you're unsure as to the value of your bike, your local independent bike shop should be able to help.

What lock do I need for my bike?

You'll need a lock if you leave your bike in a public place and it's dependent on the value of the bike as to what lock rating you'll need. Check out our Lock Requirements in the Locks & Security section/tab for further details.

What does the bike need to be locked to in the house, garage or shed?

If the bike is in a locked detached garage or shed or away from home, it needs to be locked to an immovable object. If the garage is attached to the house, or the bikes are kept in the house then they don't need to be locked.

When away from the home, the cycle must be locked to an immovable object - you are covered for a maximum of 12 hours in a public place and 24 hours if locked at a train station.

What accessories & spares are covered under my policy?

As standard, you get £250 or 10% of the total sum insured to cover accessories & spares, which include lights, panniers and GPS units (excluding smartphones). For a full list of what accessories & spares are covered, please visit the Accessories & Spares section in Product Definitions.

Are my clothes, shoes and helmet covered under my policy?

As standard, you get £250 or 10% of the total sum insured to cover clothing and headgear. For a full list of what is covered under clothing and headgear, please visit the Clothing & Headgear section in Product Definitions

Can I use a local shop to replace or repair my bicycle?

This is possible, subject to agreement with Hiscox. You have two options with any claims - the first is to replace yourself or have repaired at a local shop, provided the costs are reasonable. This option is subject to an excess. For a replacement, you may elect to have the policy replacement undertaken by Bikmo.com - they'll source a replacement bike from a local retailer and you won't have to pay any excess provided it is a cycle claim above £1,000.

What do I need for proof of ownership?

It's particularly important that you have proof of ownership of any major cycle parts and/or lock. Proof of this could be packaging, manuals or photos of all of the relevant parts, clearly showing the make (and model if applicable) of that item.

Alternatively bank or credit card statements can be provided and in some occasions, retailers may be able to provide copy receipts for larger purchases.

To save you having to look back through old documents in the event of a claim, you can upload any photos or receipts to Your Account section of Bikmo Plus.

What do I do if I don't have receipt for my lock?

Please refer to the FAQ above - the receipts for locks are treated in the same way as for bicycles.

Can I make changes to my policy?

Yes. You can make changes to the value insured, contact details, bikes and equipment in Your Account section of Bikmo Plus. Any changes to the policy may be subject to a change in the price of the policy.

What if I want to cancel my policy?

We're confident that Bikmo Plus represents the most comprehensive and best value cycle insurance product on the market so we hope you're happy with it. If you do however wish to cancel your policy for any reason then you need to take the following steps;

  • You can cancel your policy within the first 14 days for any reason and receive a full refund of premiums paid.

  • Contact Bikmo Plus on 01244 470337.

What is public liability cover?

Public Liability is also known as personal liability or third party liability. It provides cover for claims brought against you by other parties for bodily injury or property damage as a direct result of your ownership or use of the cycle.

New for Old

Bikes can be priceless. You're covered for a replacement provided your sum insured is sufficient to cover the cost of a replacement bike at today's prices. There is no time limit on the age of bikes that can be insured.

Race Fee Cover

Race fees can be expensive whether you're competing in road, MTB or tri. With Bikmo Plus, you can claim up to £500 of race fees lost as a results of theft or an incident with your bicycle.

Excess Free

Don't like paying an excess on claims? We can replace your bike from a local retailer and won't charge you any excess. This is limited to cycle claims above £1,000 - all other claims are subject to a £100 excess.

Family & Friends

If your friend or family need to borrow a bike for the weekend then they'll still be covered under your insurance, to the value of the maximum equipment away from home. This only applies to bikes and kit, not personal accident or third party liability

Breakdown Cover

It happens to all of us. If you're on a ride and can't make it back to your car or home as a results of an issue with your bike then we'll pay for transport back to your car, home or the nearest transport link up to the value of £150.


We know you can't ride all your bikes at once and taking out a policy on each of your bikes could be prohibitive. That's why we can offer up to a 50% discount for the bikes you leave at your house.

Competition Cover

Compete regularly on the road, MTB or tri? You, your bikes and kit are covered before and after the start line in competition as long as your annual competition appearance fees don't exceed £5,000. That's most of us then.

Worldwide Travel

Travel regularly with your bike for competitions or holidays? You can travel worry free with Bikmo+. You're covered year round for your equipment, anywhere in the world, whether in competitions, on a ride or during transportation.

No Claims Discount

We like to reward customers who look after their bikes. Stay with Bikmo Plus and you can earn up to 15% no claims discount, making our policy more unbeatable.

0% monthly payments

Pay for 12 months upfront and forget about it, or split the payments over 12 months, with 0% interest. There'll be an initial payment followed by rolling monthly payments. You're covered for as long as you pay your monthly installments and you won't pay any interest. Simple.

£2m Public Liability

Rest assured you're covered for any damage or injury caused to third parties up to the value of £2 million when cycling anywhere in the world, excluding the USA and Canada.

Theft, accidental & vandalism

Whether your bike is stolen, vandalised or you damage it whilst riding on the roads or trails, you're covered. Restrictions apply to locking requirements when your bike is left in a public place.

£20k Personal Accident

You have Personal Accident cover up to the value of £20,000, anywhere in the world, for serious injuries sustained from riding your bike.

Spares, Clothing & Bike Boxes

We know the value of the kit you ride or travel with, in addition to the value of your bikes. Whether it's lights, GPS, posh bib shorts, full face helmets or bike boxes, they can cost a lot to replace in the event they're damaged or stolen.

We include £250 or 10% (whichever is the greater) of your total sum insured for each of accessories & spares, clothing & headgear and bike boxes.

Locks and Security

Most cycle insurance claims are for theft, either from the owner's home or while the cycle was left unattended.

We all dislike the fact that we need to carry a lock around with us but it’s a fact that Insurers expect us to take precautions to prevent a loss. Bikmo Plus cycle insurance cover is therefore provided subject to each insured cycle being secured with an ‘Approved Lock’.

An 'Approved Lock' is one which appears on the website of a division of the Master Locksmiths Association under the brand ‘Sold Secure’, see www.soldsecure.com.

The locks are graded according to their strength, reliability and sophistication into three categories:


Bronze rated locks are only suitable for cycles up to £250 replacement value.


Silver rated locks are only suitable for cycles up to £1500 replacement value.


Gold rated locks are suitable for cycles over £1500 replacement value.

Sold Secure

The locks shown on the ‘Sold Secure’ website are the only locks which we consider to be ‘Approved’ for the purpose of the Bikmo Plus policy, up to the specific values stated above.

In the event of a claim you will need to provide us with evidence that you owned and were using an Approved Lock at the time the cycle was stolen.

If you are not currently using an Approved Lock you must replace it with one that is approved or face the possibility of having a claim disallowed.

Accessories & Spares

Accessories & Spares are defined as equipment that is not core to the operation of a bicycle, but perform a functional requirement in the pursuit of cycling. Accessories & Spares may be permanently or non-permanently affixed to the bicycle.

  • GPS and accessories. Please note : this does not include any smartphone or tablets devices used with navigation or tracking applications.

Bike Boxes

A bike box includes any piece of luggage who's purpose is to protect a bicycle whilst in transit.

This can include fabric, semi rigid or fully rigid bike boxes.

Bikmo DNA+

We love our bikes and we know you do too. We also know how stressful it is to have a bike stolen so we’re doing everything we can to prevent that from happening.

The Bikmo DNA+ forensic coding system and labels are part of that promise and why we’re providing it with every Bikmo Plus policy.


Bikmo DNA+ is part of our promise to help protect your bikes from the irritation and inconvenience that theft can cause.


Thieves are less likely to steal bikes where it can be proven that they’ve been stolen. The DNA+ labels let thieves know your bike and components can be traced.


The DNA+ system provides irrefutable proof of ownership to the police for any bike or component that’s been marked with the DNA+ liquid.

Bikmo DNA+ FAQ

What is forensic coding?

Forensic coding is a means of marking products by applying a solution which can be detected by the police if a bicycle is stolen or recovered.

The Bikmo DNA+ system has two forms of coding in the solution. The liquid itself contains a code that is unique to your pack. The liquid also contains microdots – small particles that are laser etched with a code that is unique to your pack.

Together, the two forms of coding provide a robust means of identifying any product marked with the Bikmo DNA+.

How do I apply it?

It’s as easy as dabbing liquid onto any component that you wish to have marked. There’s full instructions in your Bikmo DNA+ pack to show how and where to apply the Bikmo DNA+ liquid.

How do you detect it?

Depending on the identification type police use different methods of detection. Using an ultraviolet light, the police can detect the presence of the Bikmo DNA+ marking.

If the thief hasn’t tried to file off the Bikmo DNA+ marking then a high-powered microscope is used to read the code from the microdots.

If the thief has tried to file away the Bikmo DNA+ marking then the remaining material can be sent to a laboratory for analysis.

Mark as many components as you wish on your chosen bike. We prefer to mark the underside of components to reduce visibility of the solution.

Suggested coding location on a bike

  1. Frame – top tube, down tube or chainstays
  2. Forks – inwards facing surfaces
  3. Handlebar & stem - underside
  4. Saddle – underside
  5. Wheels – rim or outside of hub
  6. Chainset – rear of crank arm

All claims are processed by Hiscox Insurance.

Theft, Vandalism and Accidental Damage

In the unfortunate event that your bikes is stolen, damaged or vandalised then you can choose between our online system or a manual system. Please follow the following steps;

Online System

  1. Log into Your Account

  2. Locate the 'Your Claims' module and click 'Start a new claim'

  3. Fill in your claim details

  4. Review the information and terms and conditions, then click 'Submit'

The claims system picks up on the items in your Bikes & Kit list so make sure it's up to date. You can upload additional images, sketches and information in the form. If you don't have the information up-to-date then it'll take longer to fill out your form, and may mean the claims handling process takes longer.

Once your claim has been submitted, you will be informed via email as to the outcome of your claim, or contacted if any further information is required.

Manual System

  1. In the event of theft, please call your local Police

  2. Call the Hiscox Claims Team on 0845 213 8899.

  3. Download the Hiscox Claim Form : Hiscox Claim Form Download

  4. Complete and sign the claim form and return it to the following address with all the information requested from you (see the guidance notes attached to the claim form).

Important Notes

  • Please be aware that the claim form and supporting information must be provided to Hiscox within 28 days of the occurrence. If you delay the Insurers reserve the right to reject the claim.

  • Do not order a replacement cycle, or hire a cycle, until your claim has been approved and you have been told how it is to be settled.

Excess Free

In the event your bike is stolen or damaged beyond repair, the claim is validated by Hiscox and the bicycle is worth in excess of £1,000 then you have two options for replacements;

  1. Hiscox can settle the claim directly with you. This option is subject to the £100 excess covered in your policy documentation.

  2. Bikmo.com can help you choose a replacement bike and source, where possible, from a local retailer. This option is excess free. You’ll have access to a bike expert on the Bikmo team who can guide you through your replacement bike or equipment.

Please advise your Hiscox claims handler as to which replacement option you would like to pursue.

Third Party

If you’re involved in an incident then please follow the steps below;

  1. Do not admit liability, make a settlement offer or say anything which may prejudice our ability to defend your claim.
  2. Contact Hiscox Insurance as soon as possible on 01206 773 776 (9am – 5:30pm Monday to Friday) or email to hicliability@hiscox.com.
  3. Complete our Public Liability Report Form : Public Liability Form Download

Important Notes

  • Attach with the Public Liability form any correspondence received from the party who is claiming against you, together with other documents, photographs or information which will help to defend the claim.

  • Even when, after you have been involved in an accident, no claim against you has been intimated, but where you suspect that this is likely to happen, you should take the precaution of completing and submitting a Public Liability Report Form. Depending on the circumstances, claimants may have several years to bring their claim against you. The longer you leave completing the form, the more likely you are to forget details of what happened.

  • It is extremely important for you to notify us as soon as possible of any actual claim or any possible claim for compensation which has been or may be made against you as a result of a cycling accident.

Personal Accident

If you’ve been injured as a result of an accident involving the use of your bicycle and wish to claim under the Personal Accident section of your policy then please take the following steps;

  1. Notify Van Ameyde & Wallis Ltd on 020 8466 6034

You’ll be required to describe the event that caused the injury and the nature of the injury. The team at Van Ameyde & Wallis Ltd will take you through the whole process.

Emergency Hire

If your bike is damaged or stolen, and you have an event or holiday in the near future which would not allow time to provide a replacement, then you’re entitled to hire a replacement bicycle of a similar specification to the value of £250. Please take the following steps;

  1. Notify Hiscox Insurance on 0845 213 8899 to log the claim and get approval that the hire charges can be covered.

  2. Hire your replacement bike form a cycle provider and make sure to get a receipt.

  3. Download and fill in our Claims Form and submit within 28 days of the damage or theft of your bike : Hiscox Claim Form Download

  4. The hire charge will be refunded to your specified bank account within 28 days from approval of the claim.

Please note : unless you get prior approval before you hire a replacement cycle then the hire charges may not be covered.

Breakdown Cover

If you’re broken down, you can't repair your bike and continue with your ride then take the following steps;

  1. Notify Hiscox Insurance on 0845 213 8899 to log the claim and get approval that the transport charges can be covered.

  2. Source transport back to the nearest location from which you can continue your journey (listed below) and make sure to get a receipt.

  3. Download and fill in our Claims Form and submit within 28 days of the breakdown incident : Hiscox Claim Form Download

  4. The transport charge will be refunded to your specified bank account within 28 days from approval of the claim.

Important Information

  • unless you get prior approval before you hire a replacement cycle then the hire charges may not be covered.

Provided your claim is approved, we will cover transport up to the value of £150 to;

  • The nearest suitable bike shop OR
  • The most appropriate train station OR
  • Your vehicle if nearer OR
  • Home, if it’s nearer than the above.


As a Bikmo Plus customer you can earn vouchers to spend on some of the best cycling brands from UK retailers.

You’ll get a £10 voucher for each person you refer, who takes out a Bikmo Plus policy. There’s no limit to the number of vouchers you can receive, so refer 10 friends and you could earn £100 to spend on bike kit.

It’s as easy as sending an email, just use the ‘Get Rewards’ button in Your Account section, or send your unique code in Your Account section for friends, family or colleagues to use.

As soon as they’ve taken out a policy with Bikmo Plus, your account will be credited with £10, which can be used at any of our partner retailers.

How does it work?

  1. After becoming a Bikmo Plus customer, you’ll receive a unique referral code – this is also in Your Account section.
  2. Either use the ‘Get Rewards’ button in ‘Your Account’ or send your unique code to friends, family or colleagues.
  3. When they land onto Bikmo Plus and proceed to the payment section, they can either enter your voucher code or it’ll be automatically entered if they’ve used your referral link.
  4. Once the policy is taken out, you’ll receive credit into Your Account section. You can then generate a voucher which can be redeemed at any of our partner retailers.
